Cylinder lampshades bring a clean, contemporary line to a room, with straight sides that give a more architectural look than a tapered or extreme tapered shape. That same straight profile also changes how the light behaves: rather than concentrating through a narrower top opening, a cylinder lamp shade spreads light more evenly above and below, so the glow reaches further into the room.
Of course a plain cylinder lampshade can also be used as a ceiling pendant by turning it around and attaching to the ceiling suspension kit. The option to create synergy throughout your table, floor and ceiling lighting, is then yours.
Colours and Materials
The range runs well beyond the obvious choices. Alongside soft linen, crisp cotton, sumptuous velvet and the sheen of silk, you'll also find raffia and rope for a more natural, textural look, and bouclé for something with a bit more depth and warmth. Each material behaves differently with light: an open-weave raffia or handloom cotton lets a soft glow filter through the sides, while a denser fabric like velvet contains the light more and directs it up and down instead.
Lining matters just as much as the outer fabric. A self-lined shade, where the lining matches the outer material, gives a clean, understated finish, while a contrasting lining, such as the metallic tones used inside some of our velvet shades, adds a warmer glow and a hint of glamour once the lamp is switched on.
Sizing & Fit
Cylinder lampshades for table lamps means getting the proportions right more than most other shapes, since there's no taper to soften a mismatch. As a rough guide, look for a shade that sits at roughly two-thirds the height of your lamp base and around twice its width, this keeps the silhouette balanced rather than looking perched on top or swamping the base beneath it. For example, tall cylinder lamp shades for floor lamps generally need a wider or heavier base, while a shorter version suits a slimmer stick lamp.
Every shade lists its base diameter and height and recommended shade size, so you can check it against your lamp before ordering. Moreover, each one comes fitted with an E27 fitting plus a B22 adapter included, so it's ready for the vast majority of UK lamp holders and pendant fittings straight out of the box.
