Choosing the right parasol is one thing but it’s the base that keeps everything stable when the weather turns, so getting the weight right is crucial. This guide covers the key things to consider, from how your parasol type affects the base you need, to which options from Ruma's range suit different garden setups.
Parasol Base Weight Guide: Sizing by Parasol and Wind Conditions
The table below sets out recommended minimum base weights for every common parasol size and type, calibrated against typical UK wind speeds. Average wind speeds across the UK sit between 15 and 30mph, with exposed coastal and upland gardens regularly exceeding 30mph in gusts.
Note: these are minimum recommendations. If your garden is exposed, sits on an elevated plot, or faces open countryside, increase the base weight by one tier.
Why Cantilever Parasols Need a Heavier Garden Parasol Base
The key factor behind cantilever parasol base weight is the offset pole. Unlike a centre pole parasol, where the load travels straight down through the centre of the base, a cantilever (free arm) parasol transfers force at an angle. This creates leverage, which multiplies the effect of wind load on the base.
A 3m centre pole parasol may be stable on a 40–60kg base. A 3m cantilever parasol of the same canopy area will need 90kg at minimum to counteract the same conditions.
For large cantilever parasols with canopies of 3.5m or above, a 120kg base is the appropriate starting point. In an exposed position, 150kg is worth considering.
Ruma Parasol Base Comparison: Which Base for Which Setup?
Ruma's parasol base range covers every weight tier, from compact 15kg concrete bases for smaller centre pole parasols to 150kg polished granite bases for large cantilever setups. The table below compares the key options, with links to each product page.
Solid vs Fillable Bases: Which is Better?
Solid granite and concrete bases maintain their weight consistently and are the more reliable choice for exposed positions. Fillable bases (such as the Ceramica range) are filled with water or sand after installation, making them far easier to transport and position.
They are an excellent choice for gardeners who want flexibility, though it is worth checking the fill level at the start of each season as water can slowly evaporate.
40kg vs 90kg vs 120kg: A Simple Decision Guide
40kg Parasol Base
The right choice for centre pole parasols up to 3m in a reasonably sheltered garden. If the parasol threads through a table, the table itself adds meaningful resistance, which can reduce the base weight required.
90kg Parasol Base
The standard recommendation for any free arm parasol up to 3m, or a larger centre pole parasol in an exposed position. The 90kg tier is also appropriate for 3m cantilever parasols used in gardens with some natural windbreak (fencing, hedging, adjacent structures).
120-150kg Parasol Base
Required for large free arm parasols at 3.5m and above. Also the right call for any 90kg-tier setup in a fully exposed position, such as a rooftop terrace, open coastal garden, or elevated patio.
