How To Care For Your Rugs

Rugs: Essential Tips For Proper Care & Maintenance

Rugs are a great way to add colour and texture to a room. As well as this, they help to protect your flooring, provide warmth and comfort, and can even act as an accent piece in their own right.

Just like any other textile, rugs need proper care to keep them looking good for years to come. Here are some simple tips for keeping your rug clean and beautiful.

How To Clean Your Rugs

Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the appearance and longevity of your rugs around the home. Here's a guide for routine cleaning of your rugs:

To get rid of crumbs and dust that can accumulate over time, vacuum your rug regularly

Address spills and stains promptly to prevent them from setting into the rug fibres. Blot the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Rinse the area with hot water, and avoid scrubbing the stain as this may spread it.

If your rug is small enough, take it outside and shake it vigorously to dislodge embedded dirt and dust.

Depending on the material of your rug, it may benefit from professional cleaning every few years.

Preventative Measures

Avoid direct sunlight - Keep rugs away from direct sunlight and heat sources that can cause the colours to fade over time. If it's not possible to avoid sunlight, use curtains or blinds to block out UV rays during the middle of the day.

Rotate your rug - Rotate your rug 180 degrees every 6-12 months to ensure even wear. This prevents one area from becoming more worn than others and ensures that your rug stays gorgeous for longer.

Place rug pads underneath - To prevent rugs from slipping and sliding, use an underlay to provide more grip and extra cushioning.
