Outdoor Furniture Care Guide

Wooden Furniture

Teak

You will be pleased to hear that our teak furniture is easy to look after and doesn’t require a lot of care due to its high oil content.

Whilst it is naturally weather-resistant you may want to store the furniture in a cool dry place throughout the winter months. This will help to prolong its beautiful colour, as teak can look weathered over time, changing to soft grey with some gentle natural cracking along the wood grain.

Your teak furniture can also be covered with an Aerocover. These covers are breathable, and dirt and water-resistant. Before covering your furniture, please make sure that it is sparkling clean and dry. Last, but by no means least, we advise allowing airflow to your wooden furniture by using an Aerocover support pole in the middle of your furniture.

We encourage you to give your furniture a yearly clean by gently scrubbing with soapy water, followed by a thorough rinse. This will remove any dirt and restore the timber's surface, keeping it in tip-top condition. Please avoid any strong chemicals or bleach-containing detergents.

With less cleaning, the teak will take on a soft grey colour as previously mentioned. If, however, you would prefer to keep the golden honey colour of teak, a yearly maintenance session should do the trick, by lightly sanding the top layer and applying a teak sealant. A teak sealant will preserve the colour that the teak has at the time of application. Let’s be honest we could all do with a bit of preservation here and there!

Acacia Wood

Even though our Acacia wood is finished with a PU coating, the coating can become damaged by the elements. We recommend that you pamper your furniture on a yearly basis by gently sanding the top layer and adding a nice fresh PU coating to ensure your furniture stays in fabulous condition.

As wood is a natural product that can expand and shrink under different weather conditions, we recommend that you tighten the screws every now and then.

When not in use, Acacia furniture will need to be protected from the elements. Here at Ruma HQ, we recommend that you use a weatherproof Aerocover for protection from the scorching sun or rain.

When using an Aerocover make sure that your furniture is pristinely clean and dry and remember to create enough ventilation for your wooden furniture to breathe, by placing an Aerocover support pole in the middle of your furniture.

Final point…., I promise…It is recommended that you store the furniture in a cool place through the winter that is not unnaturally dry.

Rattan Effect Furniture

Our synthetic, rattan effect furniture has a lot to shout about having the advantages of being highly weatherproof, hard wearing, and UV resistant.

The easy-maintenance, carefree furniture can be cleaned with soapy water and rinsed thoroughly to ensure that no soap residue is trapped within the weave.

This easy-going, laid-back furniture can be stored in a warm or cool place. However, it is worth noting that plastic will get harder and can deteriorate in freezing temperatures as is more prone to breakage. Conversely, when the furniture gets warm it can soften and become supple.

Metal Furniture

Powder Coated Metal

Our metal furniture is powder-coated for durability against the elements. This said, the furniture should be protected from moisture as even powder-coated metal can sometimes rust.

Caring for metal furniture is easy. Give it a gentle wash with a sponge and warm, soapy water – don’t scrub with anything abrasive, as this could scratch the finish.

Avoid cleaning lumps and bumps or chipped areas as these may be more susceptible to rust. These spots can be touched up with either the paint provided or with car paint in a matching colour.

 Furniture Covers

Keep your outdoor furniture looking fresh, dry and suitably sleek with our range of weatherproof Aerocovers and cushion bags. Our outdoor furniture covers are breathable whilst being water resistant which ensures your outdoor furniture is kept dry and clean and ready to use at all times.

If covering wooden products please ensure that your furniture is clean and as dry as possible before using the cover. It is a good idea to ensure that you create sufficient ventilation for your wooden furniture when covered by using an Aerocover support pole to lift the cover. Now if you’re sitting comfortably, we are ready for the safety talk.
